Members of the Edison Police Department joined police officers from across the country to honor fallen New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam, whose funeral was held on Thursday.

Officer Islam was killed in the Midtown mass shooting on Monday along with three other people. The NYPD says Officer Islam was working an off-duty security detail at the time of the attack. He was given a line of duty funeral after confronting the shooter.

Police departments across Central Jersey paid tribute to the fallen officer and the NYPD after the deadly shooting.

“He earned the respect of his peers, he believed in the department…”

— NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch

Officer Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh. His background and contributions were lauded at his funeral in the Bronx by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

“Didarul Islam came to this country as an immigrant with no guarantees–only the hope that hard work, that humility, and that purpose might lead him somewhere meaningful. And it did,” said the police commissioner.
