The Rahway Board of Education met Tuesday evening for public comment. Dr. Tiffany Beer, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Linda Lampert, Technology, Communication, and Assessment Manager, presented the results of state testing conducted last spring.
The report reviewed 2025 New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) scores, administered to all 11th graders statewide, as well as ACCESS scores, the statewide assessment for non-native English speakers still learning the language. The full presentation can be found here, and the board agenda is available here.
According to the presentation, Rahway’s graduation rate for the Class of 2024 was 84.7%—below the state average of 91.3% and 2.6 percentage points lower than Rahway’s 2023 rate. While rates have remained relatively stable over the past four years, board members asked questions about the effectiveness of recent initiatives aimed at improving student performance and graduation rates.
Across the schools, reducing absenteeism remains a top priority. Attendance teams at each school now track and support students missing significant instructional time.
The meeting covered initiatives to increase the scores at the high school, including:
- An AP Institute to expand access to advanced courses, with students able to earn college credit through May College Board exams.
- Drop-in tutoring for all students.
- An academic intervention plan for student-athletes.
In the middle and elementary schools, the district has expanded targeted tutoring in every elementary school, opened K–12 drop-in tutoring at the Rahway Recreation Center and the 7th–8th Grade Academy, and extended the gifted and talented program to Grade 2.
K–8 teachers are also using the Illustrative Math curriculum, which focuses on visual aids and real-life examples for students. The schools are also organizing small-group “math communities” in classrooms to provide more individualized attention and, the district hopes, improve math test scores.
For Spring 2025 NJGPA results, just 32% of Rahway students met the graduation benchmark in mathematics, compared with 58% statewide. In English Language Arts, 67% of Rahway students were graduation-ready—better than in math, but still short of the state average of 81%.
