Democratic candidate for New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill made a campaign stop in Carteret on Sunday to rally support ahead of the November election.
Supporters packed the VFW hall on Pershing Ave for a lively barbecue and meet-and-greet organized by the Middlesex County Democratic Party. Guests enjoyed hot dogs, burgers, baked beans, pasta, and vegetarian samosas—among many other options—while local officials spoke about Sherrill’s leadership and urged people to vote.
Speakers included Congressman Frank Pallone and New Jersey Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin. Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman introduced the guests and spoke about how Democratic leaders in Trenton and Washington have helped bring public funding to Carteret’s parks and infrastructure.
Reiman also praised Sherrill, saying it was “fantastic” to have the congresswoman in town. He explained why the event was held at the small veterans hall: “I think veterans are going to be a dominant factor in November.”
Several local businesses catered the food, including Brunswick Burger House on Roosevelt Avenue. Co-founder Safwan Eid called the event an “amazing opportunity.”
“We’re fortunate to be here in great company,” Eid said.
Sherrill arrived to loud applause. After giving a short speech, she moved around the room to meet attendees, shake hands, and pose for photos.
“It’s wonderful to be here,” Sherrill said. “We had great turnout.”
Several Middlesex County commissioners also attended, including Charlie Kenny. Kenny said he was worried about rising support for Republicans in New Jersey.
“We want to make sure New Jersey stays a defender of democracy, and [Republican candidate] Jack Ciattarelli is for Trump,” Kenny said.
The Ciattarelli campaign could not be reached for comment. However, in a recent Facebook video, Ciattarelli accused Sherrill of being weak on antisemitism.
The event also brought out local leaders from nearby towns. South Amboy Councilman Anthony Conrad said Sherrill is focused on issues that matter to voters.
“I expect her to push affordability in New Jersey,” Conrad said.
After the Carteret event, Sherrill held another campaign stop later that day in Highland Park.
