Rahway police have provided an update on a fatal shooting inside Carriage City Plaza.
Officers responded to the downtown complex at 4:46 p.m. Friday after reports of a gunshot fired inside an apartment, the department said in a statement released Wednesday.
“Initial assessment confirmed that a single round had discharged from one apartment into an adjoining unit,” the statement said. “Officers made entry into the originating residence, where they located an adult female with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Officers began life-saving efforts until Rahway Fire Department and First Aid Squad personnel arrived. The woman was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she later died from her injuries.
Police said the investigation remains active but preliminary findings indicate there is no threat to the public. The victim has not been publicly identified.
Officials also addressed an inaccurate report circulating over the weekend that described the case as a murder-suicide. Captain Shawn Ganley, Rahway’s chief law enforcement officer, called those report “patently false” during a City Social Justice Commission meeting on Monday.
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, call or text 9-8-8 to connect with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
