It was a big night for Colonia Patriots basketball on Thursday, with both varsity teams picking up convincing wins in front of the home crowd.
The girls rolled past South Plainfield to keep their unbeaten season intact, and the boys followed with a solid win over Hightstown, their third victory in the last four games.
Girls Basketball: Colonia 60, South Plainfield 28
Colonia’s girls didn’t waste much time taking control.
They led 15–7 after the first quarter and kept adding to it, using pressure defense and steady scoring to open up a 36–15 lead by halftime. The team looked comfortable throughout, moving the ball well and making South Plainfield work for every shot.
Nashaelah Hooker did most of her damage inside, finishing around the basket and pulling down rebounds, while sophomore Ariana Sosa chipped in with smart plays and timely scoring. Freshman Samantha Howell continued to impress with her confidence, knocking down shots and pushing the pace when the opportunity was there.
The game really opened up in the third quarter as Colonia went on another run, pushing the lead past 30 and triggering a running clock. With the outcome decided, the bench got plenty of time, and the intensity never really dropped.
The 60–28 win kept Colonia undefeated, a start that’s drawn plenty of attention as the season moves along.
Boys Basketball: Colonia 53, Hightstown 37
The boys came out sharp in the nightcap, jumping out early and taking a 26–16 lead into halftime.
Hightstown made a brief push after the break, but Colonia answered with a strong stretch on both ends of the floor. Jayse Rodriguez hit big shots, while Nfa Clyne controlled the paint and helped limit second chances. Tyler Herman brought energy off the bench, and Colonia’s length caused problems all night.
After three quarters, Colonia was up 43–25, and while Hightstown kept playing hard, the gap was too much to overcome. Colonia managed the clock, spread the scoring around, and closed it out with a 53–37 win.
The victory gives the boys three wins in their last four games, a stretch that shows the team starting to find its rhythm.
Next up, the boys play 10–3 Piscataway, and the girls face 8–5 Spotswood.
