Edison Town Council Advances Committee Eliminations, Approves Appointments at Regular Meeting
Council votes move forward on dissolving several advisory boards as members praise new appointees and former council members return to speak

The Edison Township Council voted Wednesday night to advance two ordinances related to committee restructuring and to approve a slate of appointments and resolutions, marking the start of formal action on measures that had drawn public attention when they were first introduced last year.
At the start of the meeting, the council voted to advance an ordinance that would eliminate several township advisory bodies, including the Cable Television Advisory Committee, Citizens Award Committee, and Abilities Advisory Committee.
According to the ordinance language, the Citizens Award Committee was established to recognize members of the public for their efforts in supporting law enforcement goals, including reporting illegal dumping and protecting air and water quality. The Cable Television Advisory Committee was established to advise the township on cable service issues, while the Abilities Advisory Committee was intended to advocate for residents with disabilities and advise the township on accessibility and inclusion.
The ordinance states that the committees are now considered “duplicative and no longer serve their original intended purpose,” citing overlapping responsibilities and changes in how those functions are handled within township government.
Later in the meeting, the council voted to amend a related ordinance and then approved it on first reading as amended, completing the procedural steps required to move the legislation forward.
When similar committee elimination proposals were introduced last year, the strongest public backlash focused on the inclusion of the Municipal Alliance and Youth Services Commission, which works on substance abuse prevention and youth programming. That commission was removed from the revised ordinance, and no residents spoke against the updated version during Wednesday’s meeting.
Appointments Approved Following Council Commentary
The council also approved a series of mayoral and council appointments.
During public comment, several former council members stepped up to the podium to thank the governing body for approving their appointments and to endorse one another for new roles.
Former Councilman John Poyner voiced support for former Councilman Nishith Patel’s appointment to the Planning Board.
“Former Councilman Patel has always shown a thoughtful approach to issues that matter to residents. I’m confident he will once again serve the township well by helping guide responsible and appropriate development,” he said.
Patel, in turn, endorsed former Council President Margot Harris for her appointment to the Cultural Arts Commission.
“She built the foundation that it stands on. So it’s great to see the creator back with her creation,” Patel said.
After the council voted to approve the appointments, Harris thanked members for confirming her appointment and used the moment to call for renewed support for the Cultural Arts Commission.
“We have been rather, I would say, stuck in neutral. We so much want to do some wonderful things for this town, but we really are spinning our wheels right now,” Harris said.
She pointed to neighboring municipalities as examples of what Edison could pursue.
“The fact that Woodbridge has a performing arts center, and that Carteret has a performing arts center. We, a town of our size, really deserve to have this,” she said.
Harris closed by urging current council members to become more directly involved with the commission’s work.
Consent Agenda Approved
In addition to the appointments, the council approved a slate of spending items in a single vote, known as a consent agenda, which cleared a range of routine appointments, contracts, and administrative actions without further discussion.
With the ordinances advanced on first reading and appointments formally approved, the council is expected to consider final adoption of the committee restructuring ordinances at an upcoming regular meeting.
