A 71-year-old man from Iselin was killed Monday afternoon in a fatal industrial accident at the Bayway industrial complex in Linden, according to police and a statement from the operating company.

Linden Police and Fire Departments responded shortly before 2 p.m. on January 19 to reports of a fatal industrial accident on private property near the intersection of Park and Brunswick avenues. The man, identified by police as a private subcontractor, was found deceased inside a bulk liquid container.

Detectives believe the man was working on top of the container when he accidentally fell inside. At the time of the incident, the 6,000-gallon container was being filled with mineral oil, a highly refined petroleum-derived liquid, police said.

The man was removed from the container by personnel from the Linden and Bayway Fire Departments and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released later Monday, Infineum, which operates within the Bayway industrial complex, confirmed the fatality and said the victim was working as a subcontractor at the site.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a contractor who was performing work at our Bayway facility,” the company said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with all authorities investigating this tragic incident.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Linden Police Detective Bureau. A separate, independent investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also underway.
