The annual Rahway Soup Stroll kicks off this Saturday, and the biggest mistake people make is treating it like a race.

It isn’t.

The Soup Stroll is a four-week event for a reason. Trying to hit every restaurant in one afternoon usually leads to long lines, rushed walking, and a lot less fun than people expect. The better approach is to slow down, plan, and let the event unfold as it’s designed to.

The people who enjoy the Soup Stroll the most are the ones who treat each Saturday as its own small outing and have a plan that fits the weather, the crowds, and their appetite.

Before diving into a week-by-week strategy, it’s worth setting a few expectations. You are not supposed to visit every restaurant in a single day. Lines are part of the experience, especially early in the month. January cold changes how far most people realistically want to walk. And soup fatigue is real. After a few stops, even the best bowls start to blur together.

With that in mind, the smartest way to approach the Soup Stroll is to break it into four manageable Saturdays, each focused on a different part of the city.

This interactive map, created by Wizdom Media, provides the locations of restaurants offering free soup samples to help you warm up this winter.

🥣 Week-by-Week Soup Stroll Game Plan

Each week below includes a Route Card you can screenshot and save on your phone.

WEEK 1: Core Downtown / Main Street Spine

Anchor: Rahway Train Station / Main Street
Walking style: Tight downtown loop
Ideal stops: 4–6
Estimated walking time: 15–25 minutes (movement only)

Week 1 is the best place to start because downtown Main Street and lower Irving Street have the highest concentration of participating restaurants. You’re never more than a block from another option, which gives you flexibility if a stop is busy.

This is the week to get a feel for how the Soup Stroll actually works. Start on Main Street, work your way north, and only cut over to Irving Street if you still have time and energy. If a line looks long, skip it! Another stop is just steps away.

Main Street

☐ CubaNu — 1467 Main St

☐ Il Forno a Legna — 1464 Main St

☐ Flynn’s Pub House — 1482 Main St

☐ Hugo’s Peruvian Restaurant — 1505 Main St

☐ Fork — 1519 Main St

☐ Luciano’s Italian Ristorante — 1579 Main St (soups served 2–4 pm)

Irving Street

☐ Coffee Box — 1465 Irving St

☐ The Irving Social — 1443 Irving St

☐ The Lounge at Watt — 1403 Irving St

Why this works:

This is the densest part of the Soup Stroll. If one line is long, another option is a few steps away.

Week 2: Cherry Street and Milton Avenue Loop

Anchor: Cherry Street
Walking style: Compact loop
Ideal stops: 4–5
Estimated walking time: 20–30 minutes

Week 2 is one of the most satisfying Saturdays of the event. Cherry Street and Milton Avenue form a compact, flat loop that’s easy to walk and finish without feeling rushed.

This is a great week to start closer to 1 p.m., linger a bit longer at each stop, and enjoy the neighborhood feel of the event. If you want a Soup Stroll day that feels complete without overdoing it, this is it.

☐ The Waiting Room — 66 E Cherry St

☐ Sub House 85 — 85 E Cherry St

☐ La Chula Tex-Mex Cuisine — 78 E Cherry St

☐ Michelino’s Pizza — 79 E Milton Ave

☐ Adeline Deli — 45 E Milton Ave

Why this works:

Short streets, flat terrain, and a natural loop make this one of the easiest Saturdays to enjoy start to finish.

WEEK 3: Irving Street Extension

Anchor: Lower Irving Street
Walking style: Out-and-back
Ideal stops: 2–4
Estimated walking time: 35–45 minutes

By Week 3, distance starts to matter more than density. Restaurants are more spread out along Irving Street, and the cold becomes a bigger factor.

This isn’t the week to rush or stack too many stops. Dress warmer than you think you need to, pick two to four locations, and treat it as a slower, more intentional afternoon. The payoff is a calmer experience with fewer lines.

☐ Coffee Box (if skipped earlier) — 1465 Irving St

☐ Delicias Restaurante — 1524 Irving St

☐ Quilla by Sabor Peruano — 1576 Irving St

Why this works:

Everything is in one corridor. The distance is real, but the decision-making is easy.

WEEK 4: The Outer Rim

Walking style: One-way commitment
Ideal stops: 2–3
Estimated walking time: 45–90 minutes, depending on route

Week 4 is the most flexible Saturday of the month. The remaining locations are more spread across the city outskirts and don’t form clean walking clusters, creating the opportunity to choose your own adventure.

You can tackle one outlying area, revisit the soups you loved most, or call it a victory lap and keep things simple. No one needs to “complete” the Soup Stroll to enjoy it.

Option A: St. Georges Ave

☐ Moaaz Mediterranean Grill — 928 St Georges Ave

☐ Chicken Delight — 1685 St Georges Ave

☐ La Fogata — 1788 St Georges Ave

Option B: West / Elizabeth Ave

☐ 29 West Bar & Lounge — 29 W Main St

☐ The Protein Corner — 548 W Grand Ave

☐ Nettie’s — 2186 Elizabeth Ave

Additional outliers (best by car):

☐ Agapi Greek Restaurant

☐ Maná Spanish Food 2

☐ R & J Pizzeria

Why this works:

Week 4 is about flexibility. No one needs to “finish the list” to enjoy the event.

Can You Do the Soup Stroll Without a Car?

Yes! Especially in the first half of the month.

Weeks 1 and 2 are ideal for walkers and train riders. Week 3 is doable with warm layers and realistic expectations. Week 4 is optional for car-free participants and best treated as a bonus.
