The Shrewsbury Board of Education formally introduced its incoming members this month, following an uncontested election that will bring three new representatives onto the board in January.
Kelly Fiorentini, Kristin Gaul-Spitale and Jennifer Jafolla were elected earlier this month to three-year terms after running unopposed. Unofficial results show Gaul-Spitale leading with 1,338 votes, followed by Fiorentini with 1,297 and Jafolla with 1,261.
They will succeed Board President Jessica Groom and members Carolyn Barber and Karen Hepburn-Goldberg, all of whom opted not to run again. The new members will be sworn in at the board’s January reorganization meeting.
Groom said the district is gaining volunteers with longstanding ties to the school community. “We look forward to the commitment that Kelly, Kristin and Jennifer will bring to the board and to our entire community, especially in their support of students and staff,” she said.
Fiorentini, a parent of three SBS students and the PTA’s Technology & Communications Lead, said she hopes to bring openness and collaboration to the role. Teacher retention is her top priority. “Great teachers change children’s lives,” she said. “I want to help create an environment where educators feel valued, supported, and excited to continue growing in Shrewsbury.”
Gaul-Spitale, a PTA volunteer and mother of two, said she wants the board to address staff turnover after seeing firsthand the dedication of teachers during a recent school trip. “I am deeply concerned with staff turnover, and I hope to be a part of a board that can turn that around through new policies and/or amending current policies,” she said.
Jafolla, who co-chairs the Shrewsbury Community Alliance and serves on the School Safety and Climate Committee, said rebuilding trust between the board and residents will be a central focus. “This past year we’ve seen how a lack of trust toward the board from the community can affect the overall climate of the school and town,” she said.
