The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing telecommunications scam targeting customers of major providers, including Xfinity and Verizon.
According to prosecutors, scammers are sending unsolicited text messages, emails, and phone calls claiming that account terms have changed, payments were missed, or credits are available. The messages often include links to websites with subtle typos or misspellings designed to steal passwords and personal information.
In one reported scheme, scammers impersonate Xfinity and claim that customers must click a link to accept changes to the company’s Terms of Service or to reconnect a Wi-Fi network after alleged account changes. Prosecutors say these links can be used to capture login credentials and other sensitive data.
Another scam involves Verizon customers. After a recent Verizon service outage affecting more than 1.5 million users, the company announced a legitimate $20 account credit available only through the official myVerizon app. Scammers are now exploiting that announcement by sending fake messages with links requesting account login information.

The Prosecutor’s Office advises residents not to click unsolicited links, never share login credentials or personal information, and to verify account issues directly through official apps or customer service lines. Anyone who receives suspicious messages should block the sender and report the communication as spam.
