A New Jersey grand jury has indicted the chief executive officer of a technology company on charges tied to an alleged $1 million securities fraud and Ponzi-style scheme, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Prosecutors allege the executive solicited investments by promising strong financial returns and misrepresenting the company’s performance and financial stability.

Instead of investing funds as described, authorities claim money from new investors was used to pay earlier investors — a hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.

The indictment charges the defendant with violations of New Jersey securities laws and other related offenses.

State officials say the scheme targeted individuals looking to invest in emerging technology ventures, including projects tied to artificial intelligence and other high-growth sectors.

“Corporate fraud of this nature exploits ordinary people who are trying to invest in our economy,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement announcing the charges.

Authorities did not release additional details about the number of victims or total financial losses beyond the alleged $1 million amount.

The case will proceed in state court. As with all criminal defendants, the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
